The Temple is Believed to Have Been Built By The Medieval Cholas Of The late 8th Century AD, With Later Contributions From Later Pandyas, Vijayanagar kings And Madurai Nayaks. A Granite Wall Surrounds The Temple, Enclosing All Its Shrines And Bodies Of Water. The Temple Has a 5-Tiered Rajagopuram.
King Nanga Who Once Ruled Urayoor Had No off spring For Long Time And The Royal Couple Were Totally Distressed. Once, The King Was Out For Hunting And Arrived Near The Pond To Quench His Thirst. There He Found a Stunning Baby Girl In a Lotus Flower. It is Believed That Sri Mahalakshmi Appeared as a Child in a Lotus. King Nanga Was Jubilant at The Sight of The Baby And Brought The Child To His Palace. The Child Was Named ‘Kamalavalli’ as She Was Found in The Lotus. As The Years Passes By, The Baby Girl Grown up in To a Beautiful Young Woman And Fallen In Love With The Presiding Deity of The Famous Temple Situated in Sri Rangam. Kamalavalli Nachiyar Underwent Severe Penance to get Sri Ranganathar as her husband. Sri Ranganathar realized Her Desire And Pleased at The Devotion of Kamalavalli Nachiyar. Sri Ranganathar Appeared As Azhagiya Manavalan in front of Kamalavalli Thayar And Got Married. In This Temple Kamalavalli Thayar Is In Sitting Posture For The Wedding Ceremony (In bridal posture) and The Perumal Azhagiya Manavalan in Standing Posture. Sri Kamalavalli Thayar’s Birth Star is Ayilyam in The Month Of Panguni. During This Day, Sri Ranganathar Visit Kamalavalli Nachiyar And Stays in a Single Simhasanam (Serthi Utsavam) And Blesses His Devotees. Another Importance Of The Place is That, This is The Birth Place Of Sri Thiruppana Alawar Who Was a Zealous Devotee Of Lord.
In This Sthalam, Periya Pirattiyar Is Giving Her Seva In Two Different Ways. One Is ‘Irundha Seva’ And The Other One Is ‘Kidantha Seva’. Combining These Both Sevas, She is Giving Seva As “Urayum Seva” (From Sitting Seva To Sleeping Seva), This Temple is Called “Thiru Urayoor”.
The Utsavam Done Here Starts In Panguni Month And Lasts For 10 days.
On The First Day Of Panguni Uthiram, Sri Ranganathar Comes From Sri Rangam And Stay In Urayoor. And on Panguni Uthiram, He Marries Kamalavalli Naachiyar And Gives Kalyana Kola Seva To His Bhakthas.
There Is No Utsavar Found in This Sthalam as Sri Ranganathar of Sri Rangam Came Here to Marry Sri Lakshmi And The Utsavar of Sri Rangam is Considered To Be The Utsavar of This Sthalam To. There is No Brahmotsavam Conducted in This Divya Desam.

This temple remains open from 6.00 AM to 12.PM in the mornings and 5.00PM to 8.00 PM in the evenings.
